Another sculpture/piece of ย ancientย Greek civilization displayed at the Louvre is Venus de Milo, a sculpture believed to depictย Aphrodite (Venusย to theย Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty.. Like the Nike sculpture, this one has missing parts too particularly the arms. It was said to be created at some time between 130 and 100 BC. It is aย marbleย sculpture, slightly larger than life size at 203ย cm (6ย ftย 8ย in) high.
ย ยAlthough the arms were missing, which added to the fame of thisย Alexandros of Antiochโs sculpture, scholars wrote that the left arm holds an apple just below eye level which the goddess is supposedly looking at. It was also believed to have been painted to full glory but when discovered in 1820, all tintโs goneโฆschade!
When we visited the Louvre my then 3-year-old son blurted out upon seeing the statue, โI know her, Hercules broke her arms!โ This send hubby and I, an attendant and other onlookers laughing. He was referring to the scene from the Disney movie Hercules (1997), a clip is below (at 00:27):
