Industrial design – the fuss-free, no-nonsense home decor that takes inspiration from the bare and lofty look of factories has found its way to modern home-styling. Many homeowners prefer industrial style decor at it comprises less architectural details…for example, using bare bricks, a combination of metals and wood, exposed piping, as well as salvaged and upcycled materials.
If you are planning to change your home’s current style, or if you are planning to build your new home, you’d love an Industrial look if:
- you like neutrals with a little pop of colors
- you are a minimalist
- you enjoy DIYs, recycling, upcycling
- you like the combination of metal and wood
Aside from being budget-friendly, an industrial design look for your home will give off a minimalist but also well-thought plan. Here are some ways to customize the look of your home using furniture and decor for an industrial design appeal.
Table of Contents
Exposed Pipes
Pipes and ducts are usually painted, covered, or plastered over so as not to be exposed, as many think this is not aesthetically pleasing. Industrial design highlights the pipes around the house or apartment.
Most of the time in black, these pipes are made from either aluminum, steel alloys, titanium, or copper. Copper and steel rods – as is also make for pretty hanging cloth rails for your entry hall and bedroom.
Bare Walls
Bare walls aren’t seen as pretty back in the days. Today, raw plaster walls (smoothened out and sometimes with a little paint) are seen as cool.
Concrete Wall
Concrete is budget-friendly and easily-available. It also gives your home an unassuming look yet, it is very elegant when paired with other industrial design details.
Brick Wall
Red brick walls stand out when used inside one’s home but white would also do and even exudes cleanliness against black pipes. You can use an accent wall with just red bricks or an entire room with white brick walls just like the photo above.
Industrial Bed Frame
Bedroom decorating is one of the more important decisions you will make when designing your interior. The bedroom is your refuge after a long day at work (or school), so it’s important to design it to your liking.
If you’re going for an industrial design look for your bedroom, the Yaheetech Bed Frame is the best choice to include. The bed’s rustic & modern design will fit your industrial interior perfectly. The wooden panels contrasting the black metal frame gives a rustic feel for a homey feel.
Made of premium iron and high-grade MDF panels, the rails give a sturdy support for excellent load-bearing capacity. The bed features a powder-coated metal finish which is best for medium rust- and scratch-resistance. Also, the structure makes it hard for dust to accumulate and an easy wipe with a dry cloth makes it convenient to clean.
Kitchen Island or Bar
Because industrial kitchens are meant to cook large amounts of food for public consumption, they are usually made of concrete, steel, and at times wood or glass or a combination of all these materials. You can recreate the look of an industrial kitchen by including an island or bar made of wood and metal or as said steel (see below photo). Throw in black hanging lights and matching bar stools, and you’ll love the overall look for sure.
Kitchen Hood
Black kitchen hoods paired with black pendant lights look very elegant in the kitchen. But steel (silver) hoods work the same wonders too. These stainless steel vent do not only keep the smell of food away from sticking to your curtains, it really adds life to the overall look of your industrial interior.
Black-Framed Windows
Notice the black-framed glass windows on these photos? They’re fully opened, no curtains but they look very chic. While they may be more expensive, as most colored window frames that their white counterparts, they give off a dramatic aura to the home. Black-framed windows are usually used in industrial factories, warehouses, and farmhouses, that’s why when you’re going for such designs, they are the best window choice.
Black Railings
Black metal stair handrails and brackets made of industrial galvanized iron goes well with other metals in an industrial-style home. Some industrial-style handrails could be screwed into the wall mounted as an extra safety precaution. They can also be fixed with expansion screws on wood, brick or concrete wall. Or like the one on the photo below, attached on wooden stairs.
Loft
Another characteristic feature of an industrial style him is the loft. Most high-ceiling homes and apartments are ideal for this kind of style. Since the loft is in an elevated area, the use of wood and metal as materials emphasizes the warehouse feel.
Lights
While there are more energy efficient lighting, Edison string light bulbs give a dramatic feel in an industrial design setup. Pendant lights seem to pair well with the look too.
If you want to conserve energy, you can still achieve an industrial look using black hanging lights as shown in previous photos. You can conceal the led lights under black pendant light hoods.
Concrete or Hardwood Flooring
As this look takes inspiration from factories and warehouses, concrete flooring is a no doubt the best to use. Concrete floors are tough and resilient and able to withstand pressure from heavy equipment like forklifts, so damaging a concrete floor at home is not easy. On the contrary, maintenance of polished concrete flooring is easy, just mop away and you’re good to go.
Wooden floors that match your furniture are good too if you do not enjoy the look of concrete. Hardwood floors can also withstand the test of time, as long as cared for properly. Depending on your preference, you can achieve an industrial design look for your home with either flooring, maybe even combine both.
Industrial Shelving
To complete the industrial look of your interior, include shelving, coffee tables, side tables, hanging shelves that go with your theme: metal and wood.
I saw this Yaheetech Wooden Console Table which is perfect for little displays and even plants. There were also bookshelves, side tables, and hall tree that matches the others really well. Sticking to a theme for every room in your home makes it look all the more minimalist. But putting a yellow sofa in the middle of all the neutrals is also a good idea.
Overall, Yaheetech has a complete set of what you need for you to have an industrial design look for your home.
